Henfield Medical Practice Monthly Prescriptions Policy

It is the policy of this practice to issue 28 days of repeat medication

In keeping with NHS good practice guidelines the department of health says that a 28 day repeat prescribing interval is recognised as making the best possible balance between patient convenience, good medical practice and minimal drug wastage.

  • This will reduce the amount of medication that is currently wasted.
  • As a practice we are charged with managing NHS resources in the most efficient way. One study found that 28 day prescribing reduced the amount of wastage by one third, this frees up money for other medical services.
  • This ensures more regular reviews of medication
  • Ensuring that the medication is monitored and adjusted to your requirements.
  • Pharmaceutical companies manufacture a large number of medications in 28 day packs
  • This means that you will receive your medication in whole packs with an information leaflet.
  • All your medication will run out at the same time
  • You will only need to order medicines once every four weeks and will be able to order all your regular medicines together

Should you require two or more prescribed items a month it may be cheaper to purchase a pre-payment certificate.

You can apply for a pre-payment certificate by telephoning the issuing office on   0300 330 1341
