Bowel Cancer Screening

Bowel cancer screening involves an at-home test called the Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT), designed to detect tiny, invisible traces of blood in a single poo sample, which can indicate early signs of cancer

Henfield Medical Centre does not provide the "FIT kits". The test will come directly in the post from NHS bowel cancer screening (BCSP) programme. The following information was taken from https://www.gov.uk/guidance/bowel-cancer-screening-programme-overview

  • We invite people aged 50 to 74 years for bowel cancer screening every 2 years
  • People must be registered with a GP and live in England to be invited.
  • People aged 75 or over can ask for a screening kit every 2 years by calling the free helpline on 0800 707 60 60.
  • If you are under 50, please see the FOR ANY AGE section below. You will not be invited by this service

People eligible for bowel cancer screening get an invitation letter, along with an information leaflet explaining screening and its possible benefits and risks.

About a week later, the programme sends a FIT kit with instructions on how to use it at home. Results are sent out 2 weeks after the laboratory receives the completed kit.

The screening programme offers individuals with an abnormal screening result a colonoscopy.
